Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has reported stabilising customer withdrawals following a massive cyberattack that resulted in the theft of approximately $6.3 billion in digital assets.
According to the exchange, customers withdrew $3.64 billion, representing 2.1 percent of its total assets, after services resumed on Sunday. However, Binance said withdrawal activity had declined following an initial surge, while deposit volumes remained substantial.
The exchange has been working to restore investor confidence after the security breach, which analysts consider potentially the largest financial robbery in history.
Binance reported that it had covered approximately 95 percent of the stolen assets using company funds and replacement cryptocurrency purchases. The remaining five percent consists of less-liquid digital assets that may take longer to replace.
Meanwhile, the FBI has attributed the cyberattack to North Korea’s state-sponsored hacking group, TraderTraitor. Investigators also reported that hackers were converting stolen cryptocurrency into Ethereum, raising concerns about further money laundering.
The exchange has approximately 335 million registered users worldwide and reported $171 billion in assets under management as of October 28.
The incident has renewed concerns about cryptocurrency security and the risks facing investors using major digital asset platforms.
