Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has confirmed a major security breach affecting approximately $6.3 billion in digital assets, triggering concerns across global cryptocurrency markets.
The company disclosed the incident on Friday, October 30, 2026, announcing that nearly $3 billion in affected assets had already been frozen.
The attack could become the largest cryptocurrency security breach recorded, although investigations are continuing.
How Did Hackers Target Binance?
Binance’s preliminary investigation suggests that attackers compromised a laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer.
The breach reportedly allowed unauthorized access to a service container, enabling fraudulent withdrawal transactions.
However, Binance said investigators had found no evidence that private wallet keys were exposed.
The company promised to publish a detailed technical investigation after verifying the incident.
Binance Freezes $3 Billion in Crypto Assets
Binance temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while conducting security checks.
The exchange also revoked affected account authorizations and contacted law enforcement agencies.
Stablecoin issuer Tether reportedly froze approximately $1.6 billion in suspicious assets.
Meanwhile, Circle blocked more than $800 million connected to the incident.
Binance assured customers that their funds remained protected and promised to cover losses using company resources and its emergency protection fund.
Bitcoin and Ethereum Prices Fall After Hack
News of the cyberattack triggered declines across major cryptocurrency markets.
Bitcoin initially dropped nearly 5%, while Ethereum fell almost 6%.
Binance’s native BNB token also experienced sharp volatility.
The incident follows the $1.5 billion Bybit hack in February 2025.
Authorities are investigating the latest breach as cybersecurity experts assess its wider implications for digital asset security.
