Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has called for national reconciliation, stating that President Asif Ali Zardari is the only leader capable of ending political polarisation in the country. Speaking at a public gathering commemorating the 18th death anniversary of slain leader Benazir Bhutto in Gari Khuda Baksh, he emphasised that political harmony is essential for both democratic stability and economic progress.
Bilawal described Zardari as the “king of reconciliation,” highlighting his pivotal role in uniting political forces during crises. He stated that the country’s political divide is damaging democracy, economic growth, and national security. According to him, resolving political tensions is a prerequisite for overcoming Pakistan’s broader economic challenges.
Political Engagement Over Confrontation
The PPP chairman urged all political parties to pursue dialogue and cooperation instead of confrontation. He noted that sustainable solutions require political engagement and responsible behaviour from both ruling and opposition parties. “If we want to resolve our problems, political forces must find a political way forward,” he said, stressing that national interests should take precedence over partisan goals.
Bilawal recalled past events following Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, noting how slogans such as “Pakistan na khappay” reflected a nation in turmoil. He credited Asif Ali Zardari with stabilising the federation through the “Pakistan khappay” movement and helping remove a dictator. He emphasised that reconciliation, rather than revenge, was central to Benazir Bhutto’s legacy, which continues to inspire the party’s approach to politics.
Warning Against Political Extremism
Highlighting the resurgence of political extremism, Bilawal warned parties to avoid attacking state institutions. He cited the May 2023 events following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan, which included assaults on military installations and government offices, as examples of actions outside democratic norms. He urged restraint, stating that abuse of institutions undermines democracy.
National Security and Regional Achievements
Bilawal praised Pakistan’s armed forces for their decisive response to Indian aggression earlier this year. He credited the military and Pakistan Air Force for successfully defending the country during the May confrontation, framing it as a national victory. He also commended President Zardari for strengthening Pakistan’s strategic ties with China, facilitating defence cooperation, and laying the foundation for CPEC, which enhanced national deterrence capabilities.
Economic Governance and Provincial Autonomy
Addressing economic concerns, Bilawal stressed the importance of devolving more powers to provinces. He argued that provincial governments can manage taxation, electricity distribution, and other resources more efficiently, citing companies like Sepco, Hesco, and Fesco as examples. He acknowledged that inflation remains a concern but noted that economic indicators have improved compared to the previous PTI government, even if citizens have yet to feel the benefits directly.
The PPP-led Sindh government’s initiatives were highlighted, including free healthcare services at major hospitals such as NICVD and Gambat, construction of two million homes for flood victims, and granting ownership rights to affected women. Bilawal also praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for announcing an agricultural emergency following PPP recommendations, providing relief to farmers.
Call for Responsible Politics
Bilawal concluded by urging both the government and opposition to prioritise national interest over political point-scoring. He reiterated that the federation thrives when politics is guided by reconciliation, not revenge. According to him, sustainable progress in Pakistan depends on political harmony, economic reforms, and cooperative governance.
