PPP Chairman Approves CM Candidate
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has nominated Advocate Amjad Hussain as the partyโs candidate for the post of Gilgit-Baltistan chief minister.
The announcement came after the PPP emerged as the leading party in the recent Gilgit-Baltistan general elections.
The party is preparing to form the next government in the region with support from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.
According to an official statement shared on X, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari decided to appoint PPP Gilgit-Baltistan President Advocate Amjad Hussain as the next chief minister.
The statement also said Bilawal held a telephonic conversation with Amjad Hussain and issued instructions regarding government formation.
PPP and PML-N Agree on Power Sharing
The nomination follows a proposed power-sharing formula between local leaders of the PPP and PML-N.
Under the arrangement, the chief ministerโs office will go to the PPP.
The PML-N will receive the governorโs office and the position of opposition leader in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly.
The formula was agreed after consultations between both parties following the election results.
The PPP had already announced that it would form a coalition government in Gilgit-Baltistan with PML-N support.
Bilawal also directed Amjad Hussain to focus on the constitutional and economic rights of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Who Is Advocate Amjad Hussain?
Advocate Amjad Hussain has served as PPP Gilgit-Baltistan president since 2016.
He won a seat in the recent elections from GBA-I Gilgit.
A senior lawyer by profession, Hussain is known for his work on legal and constitutional matters related to the region.
He served as a member of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly from 2020 to 2025.
He was also a member of the Gilgit-Baltistan Council from 2009 to 2014.
In the 2020 elections, Hussain contested from two constituencies, GBA-I Gilgit and GBA-IV Nagar. He won both seats but later vacated the Nagar seat.
He also served as opposition leader in the GB Assembly from 2020 to 2023 during the PTI-led government.
Hussain played a key role in moving the GB Land Reforms Act, passed in 2025.
His political campaigns focused on right to rule and right to ownership, which later became part of the PPP election manifesto.
He has also been a strong supporter of provincial status for Gilgit-Baltistan.
