PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said he received the Joint Awami Action Committee’s response to his proposal for a Truth and Reconciliation Commission. He announced the development on Saturday through a post on X.
Bilawal said he welcomed the group’s willingness to engage with the proposed commission. He added that the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly had also endorsed the proposal.
The PPP has repeatedly called for an independent reconciliation commission amid ongoing protests in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Consequently, Bilawal said the initiative could help address the current crisis.
AJK Government To Consult Key Stakeholders
Bilawal said Azad Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore will now consult relevant stakeholders. The consultation will include the federal government before deciding the next course of action.
According to Bilawal, authorities will assess whether sufficient common ground exists for a mutually agreed proposal. Furthermore, he said his foremost priority remains restoring peace and normal life in the region.
PPP Seeks Peaceful Resolution To Crisis
The dispute between the regional government and the JAAC has continued over several issues. The committee has particularly demanded the abolition of 12 reserved refugee seats in the AJK Legislative Assembly.
Earlier this week, Bilawal urged both the government and protesters to support the proposed commission. He also said the region’s legislative assembly had approved a resolution seeking an independent inquiry into the violence and a negotiated settlement.
