Chris Affleck Dies at 83 After Cancer Diagnosis
Ben Affleck and his family are mourning the death of his mother, Christopher Anne “Chris” Affleck.
Chris died peacefully in her sleep on June 2, 2026. She was 83 years old.
She had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2025. Doctors reportedly told her that she had around six months to live.
Her death was confirmed through an obituary published by her family in The Boston Globe.
Chris was also the mother of Academy Award-winning actor Casey Affleck.
Representatives for Ben and Casey had not immediately issued separate public statements following the obituary’s publication.
Final Wish Fulfilled at Grandson’s Graduation
Chris reportedly focused on one deeply personal goal during the final months of her life.
Her greatest wish was to see her grandson Atticus graduate from high school.
She fulfilled that wish on May 31, 2026.
Chris attended the graduation ceremony with members of her family despite her serious illness.
Two days later, she died peacefully in her sleep.
Atticus is one of Casey Affleck’s two sons. Chris had five grandchildren from Ben and Casey.
Her grandchildren were described in the family obituary as the driving force of the final two decades of her life.
She celebrated their achievements but especially admired their willingness to question authority and defend their beliefs.
Teacher, Activist and Driving Force Behind Her Sons
Chris was known for achievements extending far beyond her connection to Hollywood.
Born Christopher Anne Boldt in New York City in December 1942, she later graduated from Harvard.
She spent approximately 35 years working as a public school teacher before retiring in 2008.
Her work reflected a lifelong commitment to education, equality and public service.
Chris also participated in civil rights activism.
She taught literacy classes in Mississippi during the 1964 Freedom Summer campaign.
She later marched against the Vietnam War and remained involved in political and humanitarian causes after retirement.
Her activities included campaigning for Barack Obama and working with the Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine.
She was also a founding board member of the Sustainable Cape project in Truro, Massachusetts.
Chris played an important role in launching Ben Affleck’s acting career.
She connected him with casting director Patty Collins, a former Harvard roommate.
That introduction helped Ben secure acting opportunities as a child and gave him an early path into the entertainment industry.
Casey also previously described his mother as highly supportive of both brothers’ developing careers.
Chris shared one of Ben’s most memorable career moments at the 1998 Academy Awards.
She attended the ceremony when Ben and Matt Damon won Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting.
Ben embraced his mother after the victory and publicly thanked her during the awards celebration.
The emotional appearance reflected the close relationship she maintained with her sons throughout their rise in Hollywood.
Chris is survived by Ben, Casey and her five grandchildren, Indiana, Violet, Atticus, Fin and Samuel.
