The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has announced major spending cuts, including the closure of three broadcast services and more than 100 news jobs.
The decision comes as the broadcaster struggles to achieve its £500 million savings target by 2028.
BBC Announces Closure of Three Broadcast Services
The BBC will end traditional broadcasts of BBC Three, BBC Scotland, and Radio 4 Extra in spring 2027.
However, viewers will still access BBC Three and BBC Scotland programmes through BBC iPlayer.
Radio 4 Extra’s programmes will also remain available through BBC Sounds.
The broadcaster aims to reduce costs while focusing on digital platforms.
Over 100 BBC News Jobs Face Cuts
BBC News Director Rachel Jupp announced plans to eliminate more than 100 positions.
The proposed job reductions will save approximately £5.5 million.
Meanwhile, the BBC has identified around £200 million in savings. It must still find approximately £300 million to meet its financial target.
Director General Matt Brittin said the broadcaster must manage costs while adapting to changing audience habits.
BBC Faces Criticism Over Channel Closures
The announcement has drawn criticism from trade unions and Scottish political leaders.
Scottish Culture Secretary Mairi McAllan strongly opposed the closure of BBC Scotland’s television service.
Broadcasting union Bectu also warned that repeated job cuts could damage staff morale.
BBC Three previously moved online in 2016 before returning to television in 2022.
The latest decision will return the channel to a digital-focused model.
The restructuring highlights growing financial pressure on traditional broadcasters as audiences increasingly prefer online streaming services.
