Barcelona coach Hansi Flick believes teenage star Lamine Yamal is gradually returning to his best level. Flick made the comments ahead of Barcelona’s La Liga clash against Rayo Vallecano on Monday.
Yamal struggled during Barcelona’s opening match against Elche but showed improvement against Athletic Bilbao. However, the winger failed to score in either match as he continues his return to full form.
Flick believes Yamal is moving closer to the level he showed before suffering a hamstring injury.
Flick Sees Yamal Returning to His Best
Yamal has not fully reached his previous level since suffering the hamstring injury in April. Although he returned during the World Cup, his individual impact remained limited despite Spain’s successful campaign.
Flick said Yamal’s recent circumstances should be considered when assessing his performances at the start of the season.
“I know everyone is worried about how Lamine is, how he’s doing. And of course, look at his situation, he played a World Cup after a huge injury,” Flick told reporters Sunday.
“Now he’s coming back after three weeks holiday… and also the first game maybe was not his best game.
“But I said this, I was very happy that he started the game and he worked for the team.”
The Barcelona coach appeared encouraged by Yamal’s contribution against Athletic despite his disappointment during the opening half.
Yamal Shows Improvement Against Athletic Bilbao
Yamal appeared frustrated during the first half against Athletic but raised his performance after the break.
He completed the full 90 minutes, giving him valuable playing time as he continues rebuilding his rhythm.
“He played 90 minutes against Bilbao. And for him at the moment, it’s also good to have 90 minutes on the pitch,” Flick said.
Flick also believes he saw signs of Yamal returning to his highest level during the match.
“We saw him in some situations really on this top level. And now, you couldn’t see this in the training (session) today, but I saw it, and it was excellent.
“Everyone loves Lamine, and he’s in a good way. And we have to support him, and we do that.”
The comments suggest Barcelona remain confident that the young winger can rediscover his best form.
Yamal’s Mood Improves Ahead of Rayo Clash
Yamal appeared unhappy after Barcelona’s match against Elche, although his mood seemed brighter during training.
Flick acknowledged that players can experience different emotions depending on their performances and circumstances.
“Of course, it’s always good when the players are smiling, but it’s not every day the same day,” Flick said.
“I’m also not smiling every day — it’s like that.”
The coach’s comments reflected his view that Yamal’s development should not be judged solely by his mood.
Instead, Flick appears focused on giving the youngster time and support as he regains his sharpness.
Barcelona Still Relying on Raphinha Up Front
Barcelona have won both of their opening fixtures despite using Raphinha as a makeshift number nine.
The champions were unable to secure their top target Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid during their efforts to strengthen the attack.
Flick nevertheless said he remains satisfied with the squad available to him.
“Of course I’m happy with my team; (sporting director) Deco is working on that to strengthen the team. We don’t have pressure,” Flick said.
Flick also reiterated that he remains comfortable with his current players if Barcelona do not sign another striker.
With Yamal continuing his return to top form, Barcelona will hope the teenager can make a bigger impact as the season progresses.
