BARCELONA:ย Barcelona secured their 28th LaLiga title in style on Thursday night, defeating city rivals Espanyol 2-0 in a decisive clash that sealed their dominance in the Spanish top flight. With just two matches remaining in the season, the victory put Barcelona seven points clear of arch-rivals Real Madrid, rendering any further title chase mathematically impossible.
Heading into the match, Real Madrid’s title hopes were already hanging by a thread following their dramatic 4-3 loss to Barcelona the previous weekend. Los Blancos had to win all three of their remaining fixtures and hope that Barca collected no more than a single point during the same stretch. However, those slim chances were extinguished at the Stage Front Stadium, where Barรงa took matters into their own hands.
The breakthrough came in the 53rd minute courtesy of teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal. The 17-year-old winger delivered a moment of brilliance, receiving the ball near the right flank, cutting in across the edge of the penalty area, and curling a spectacular left-footed shot past the goalkeeper into the top corner. It was a strike reminiscent of his growing signature style โ composed, precise, and unstoppable.
Five minutes into stoppage time, substitute Fermin Lopez added the finishing touch. After a well-placed assist from Yamal, Lopez fired home from inside the box to secure the victory and ignite celebrations among the Catalan faithful. The win elevated Barcelona to 85 points on the league table, comfortably ahead of second-placed Real Madrid (78 points), with Atletico Madrid trailing further behind at 70.
The victory caps off an extraordinary debut season for new manager Hansi Flick, who has now led his side to a domestic double โ LaLiga and Copa del Rey โ marking a triumphant start to his tenure at Camp Nou.
Though the first half of the match was evenly contested, Espanyol had the better chances early on. Barca goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was pivotal in keeping the scores level, notably denying a close-range shot from Javi Puado with a brilliant reflex save. The match was also briefly delayed due to an unfortunate incident outside the stadium where several fans were injured after being struck by a car.
Despite the tense opening half and Espanyol’s spirited counter-attacks, Barcaโs youth-led squad eventually took control. Yamalโs strike not only unlocked the game but also energized the entire team. His teammate Pedri praised the young wingerโs effort, saying, โLamineโs goal is a move he practices a lot โ he had scored two like that in the warm-up today. We have to protect him and let him enjoy the game. He is fantastic.โ
The red card shown to Espanyolโs Leandro Cabrera in the 80th minute for elbowing Yamal further tilted the momentum in Barcelonaโs favor, setting the stage for Lopezโs clincher and the beginning of title celebrations.
Barcelona will officially receive the LaLiga trophy on Friday during a special ceremony in the city, marking yet another memorable chapter in the clubโs illustrious history.
