United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Bangladeshi diplomat Rabab Fatima as the new head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan. She succeeds the mission’s acting leadership following the latest appointment.
Fatima currently serves as the UN’s High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States. She brings more than three decades of diplomatic and public service experience.
According to the UN, her career includes extensive work in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy. Additionally, she has contributed to policymaking, advocacy, programme planning, and implementation.
Veteran Diplomat Takes Leadership Role
Before joining the United Nations, Fatima served in several diplomatic postings for Bangladesh. She also represented her country as its permanent representative to the United Nations.
The UN said her experience makes her well suited for the leadership position. Consequently, she will oversee the organisation’s political and humanitarian engagement in Afghanistan.
Fatima replaces Canadian official Georgette Gagnon, who had been serving as acting head of the mission. Gagnon previously held the position of deputy special representative at UNAMA.
UNAMA Continues Key Role in Afghanistan
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan was established in 2002. Since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, the mission has coordinated humanitarian assistance and supported political dialogue.
Additionally, UNAMA continues monitoring the human rights situation across Afghanistan. The mission remains a central part of the UN’s engagement with the country.
In June, the UN Security Council renewed UNAMA’s mandate for another year. However, the United States expressed reservations regarding certain aspects of the mission’s objectives and methods.
The latest appointment comes as the United Nations continues efforts to address Afghanistan’s humanitarian and political challenges through sustained international engagement.
