Report says Hamas proceeded despite alleged Iranian objections during recent talks
WASHINGTON: Officials from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) urged members of a Hamas delegation not to sign a proposed Gaza disarmament agreement during a recent visit to Tehran, according to an Axios report citing a source familiar with the discussions.
Axios reported that Hamas representatives met IRGC officials while visiting Iran for the funeral of former supreme leader Ali Khamenei. According to the report, a senior US official also claimed that Iran attempted to persuade Hamas to reject the agreement. However, the official said Hamas ultimately chose not to follow Tehran’s advice.
Iran has not publicly commented on the report, and the claims have not been independently verified.
Trump announces disarmament agreement
The Axios report followed US President Donald Trump’s announcement that the Board of Peace had reached what he described as a “historic” agreement for the complete disarmament of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the agreement represented a major step toward achieving lasting peace and security.
Senior White House Board of Peace officials told The Jerusalem Post that months of negotiations were required to address Hamas’s concerns and secure the reported breakthrough. According to the officials, discussions also included measures to prevent funding from reaching Hamas, establish an international stabilisation force and train local Palestinian security personnel to assume responsibilities in Gaza.
Implementation expected in coming weeks
White House officials told The Jerusalem Post that implementation efforts are expected to begin in the coming weeks following extensive planning and coordination with regional stakeholders.
The officials also said they consulted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the negotiations and worked to develop plans for Gaza’s post-conflict governance and security arrangements.
Neither Hamas nor the Iranian government had publicly responded to the latest claims at the time of reporting. The details reported by Axios and The Jerusalem Post remain based on statements from unnamed sources and US officials, while the proposed agreement and its implementation have yet to be independently confirmed by all parties involved.
