In response to the escalating blackouts indicating severe economic strain, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made a significant move on Sunday by appointing Awais Leghari as Minister for the Power Division, tasking him with the urgent mission of resolving the deepening energy crisis.
Initially, when the federal cabinet was unveiled last week, the Prime Minister had entrusted Musadik Malik with overseeing the Power Division, while Leghari assumed responsibility as Minister for Railways. However, after a series of intensive discussions aimed at addressing the challenges within the power sector, Leghari’s role underwent a swift transformation, and he was promptly designated as the Federal Minister for Energy.
The oath of office was administered by President Zardari to Prime Minister Shehbaz’s 19-member federal cabinet, solidifying Leghari’s new position.
With a background in agriculture, Leghari brings prior experience as the Federal Minister for the Power Division during Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s tenure from 2017 to 2018.
In an interview, Abbasi commended Leghari’s dedication but expressed disappointment over his previous hesitation in making timely decisions on crucial matters related to the energy crisis.
The appointment of Leghari underscores the government’s recognition of the pressing need to address the energy crisis on a priority basis. With his appointment, there is renewed hope for swift and effective measures to mitigate the impact of the worsening blackouts and restore stability to the energy sector.
Leghari’s track record and the urgency of the situation underscore the gravity of the task at hand. The nation looks to him and the newly appointed federal cabinet to deliver tangible solutions to alleviate the burden of the energy crisis and propel the country towards a more stable and prosperous future.
