Australian independent lawmaker Helen Haines suffered critical injuries after a car struck her outside her electorate office in Wangaratta on Monday. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as a deliberate attack, while police arrested the driver and launched an investigation.
What Happened Outside Helen Haines’ Office?
The incident occurred in Wangaratta, more than 200 kilometres northwest of Melbourne, according to police. Victoria Police Acting Superintendent Ashley Mason said the 65-year-old lawmaker had sustained injuries described as critical.
Although Mason did not identify the victim, Australian police typically follow that practice when speaking publicly about such incidents. Meanwhile, civilians detained the 43-year-old male driver before police arrested him.
Officers also discovered a knife inside the driver’s car. However, authorities had not established the alleged attacker’s motive, Albanese said.
The incident prompted the activation of Australia’s counter-terrorism squad as investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Albanese Calls the Incident a Deliberate Attack
Albanese stressed that the incident was not an ordinary road accident, describing it as an intentional act.
“This wasn’t an accident. There was a deliberate act,” Albanese told national broadcaster ABC.
He also expressed support for Haines, her family and those affected by the incident.
“All of our thoughts are with Helen, her family, her friends, her team, and her community at this extremely difficult time. We are praying for her full recovery.”
The prime minister also raised concerns about the growing hostility directed towards Australian politicians. He noted that the Australian Federal Police had documented a steady increase in threats and abuse against elected representatives in recent years.
In response, the federal police established a dedicated team last year to investigate groups and individuals targeting lawmakers.
Albanese said the public atmosphere had become increasingly hostile, including through online comments and social media discussions.
“the temperature has increased in recent times,” he said.
“I’ve expressed that concern to people in the media,” he added.
“If you look at anyone’s social media feeds and look at the comments, people will say things that they would never say face to face.”
Who Is Helen Haines?
Haines entered the Australian Parliament in 2019 after working as a nurse and midwife. During her political career, she became known for advocating stronger climate action and greater transparency in government.
She also earned recognition for efforts to strengthen political accountability and combat corruption.
Following Monday’s incident, her family confirmed that she was receiving medical care after an event outside her Wangaratta electorate office.
“This afternoon, our beloved Helen was involved in an incident outside her Wangaratta Electorate Office, and is receiving medical care,” her family said in a statement.
The family thanked bystanders who responded quickly, along with healthcare workers and police who assisted after the incident.
“We thank the swift assistance of bystanders and the dedicated health workers who assisted her, and police for their response.”
They also asked the public and media to respect their privacy while Haines received treatment.
“Our family, and Helen’s staff, will be making no further comment at this time, and ask that their privacy be respected by the public and media,” the statement said.
Prime Minister Praises Haines as Investigation Continues
Albanese praised Haines’ professional dedication and personal character as she received medical care.
“She is incredibly hardworking,” he said, describing her as both intelligent and compassionate.
“She is fiercely intelligent but, most importantly, she’s just a thoroughly decent human being,” he added.
Authorities had not disclosed a motive for the alleged attack. Meanwhile, the activation of the counter-terrorism squad underscored the seriousness with which investigators were treating the incident.
The investigation continues as Haines’ family, colleagues and community await further information about her condition and recovery.
