Australian authorities have launched an investigation into the links between Australia and the co-pilot accused of attacking the captain of a Flydubai flight. The Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism Team, involving federal and state police alongside ASIO, is examining the man’s connections to the country.
The investigation follows an incident aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073, which travelled from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30. The co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain with a crash axe before attempting to take control of the aircraft, prompting an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
Co-Pilot Studied At Melbourne University
Sources familiar with the investigation said the co-pilot studied at a university in Melbourne around a decade ago. RMIT University also confirmed that he had enrolled there but did not complete an engineering qualification.
Authorities are now examining his time in Australia as part of the broader investigation. According to reports, he held an Australian student visa and studied in the country between 2015 and 2017, although authorities have not established that Australia played a role in the alleged attack.
Investigators Examine Attack Background
The United Arab Emirates is separately investigating the incident and has described it as an attempted terrorist attack. The co-pilot reportedly attacked the captain while the aircraft was flying toward Israel, causing the plane to plunge thousands of feet before the crew and passengers subdued him.
A reserve pilot then took control and landed the aircraft safely at Tabuk airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, investigators continue examining the suspect’s background, possible motives, and connections as authorities seek to determine how the incident occurred.
