Australian skywatchers are gearing up for a potential celestial spectacle tonight as the Aurora Australis, or Southern Lights, is expected to illuminate skies across several parts of the country. This dazzling display comes just a month after vibrant green and purple lights were observed, delighting astronomy enthusiasts and casual viewers alike.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, atmospheric and solar conditions are favorable for the Aurora Australis to appear on December 9, 2025. However, the forecast does not specify the exact timing or precise locations where the lights will be most visible, leaving skywatchers reliant on general guidance and real-time observation.
Michael Brown, Associate Professor of Astronomy and Physics at Monash University, advised that the best opportunity to see the lights is during the hours after sunset. He cautioned, “The show isn’t guaranteed; however, there’s a strong chance that a stunning display will be visible tonight.”
The Space Weather Prediction Center has provided estimated two-hour windows for optimal viewing in major Australian cities. In Sydney, the best window is from 8:15 PM to 10:15 PM, while Melbourne is expected to see the lights between 8:40 PM and 10:40 PM. Hobart’s suggested window is 9:10 PM to 11:10 PM, Adelaide from 8:40 PM to 10:40 PM, and Perth from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Brisbane residents can look up between 6:50 PM and 8:50 PM, Canberra from 8:20 PM to 10:20 PM, and Darwin between 6:45 PM and 8:45 PM.
Auroras are generally most active between 10 PM and 2 AM local time, meaning viewers may see intermittent activity outside the suggested windows. Experts recommend finding areas with minimal light pollution and a clear view of the southern horizon to maximize the chances of witnessing the phenomenon.
While sightings cannot be guaranteed, astronomy enthusiasts and casual viewers alike are preparing cameras, tripods, and warm clothing in anticipation of what could be a breathtaking display of nature’s lights across the Australian night sky.
