Sri Lanka is preparing to introduce a six-month free tourist visa program that will include Pakistani passport holders among eligible travelers. The initiative aims to attract more international visitors and strengthen the countryโs tourism sector.
Tourism Revival Through Visa Facilitation
The proposed program is part of broader efforts to support tourism recovery and economic growth. Authorities believe easier travel access will encourage more visitors to choose Sri Lanka as a destination.
Government officials confirmed that draft regulations have already been prepared. These regulations will be presented to parliament after receiving cabinet approval. Once approved, travelers from selected countries will receive tourist visas without paying standard visa fees.
As a result, the policy is expected to reduce travel costs and make short-term tourism more accessible. Officials hope the initiative will increase visitor numbers during the program period.
Pakistan Included in Eligible Countries List
Pakistan is among 39 countries selected for the free visa initiative. The list also includes Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Additionally, several European and Asian countries are part of the program. Authorities selected these nations based on tourism potential and existing travel engagement.
The inclusion of Pakistan highlights growing travel cooperation and people-to-people connections between the two countries. Consequently, Pakistani tourists may find Sri Lanka a more affordable travel option once the program begins.
Legal Framework and Approval Process
The draft regulations were prepared by the Legal Draftsmanโs Department under the Immigration and Emigration Act. The proposal was submitted by the Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs before gaining cabinet endorsement.
However, the initiative will only take effect after parliamentary approval. Lawmakers will review the framework before granting final authorization.
Officials stated that the free visa scheme was originally approved during a cabinet meeting held on July 21, 2025. The current step moves the proposal closer to implementation.
Six-Month Implementation Period
Once parliament approves the proposal, the free tourist visa program will run for six months. During this time, eligible visitors will be able to enter Sri Lanka without paying visa charges.
The temporary nature of the program allows authorities to evaluate its economic impact. If successful, similar initiatives may be considered in the future.
Moreover, tourism stakeholders expect the policy to support hotels, transport services, and local businesses that depend heavily on foreign visitors. Increased tourist arrivals could therefore contribute to broader economic activity.
What It Means for Pakistani Travelers
For Pakistani tourists, the program may offer an opportunity to explore Sri Lanka at reduced travel costs. Lower visa expenses can make international trips more attractive, especially for families and frequent travelers.
At the same time, travelers will still need to meet standard entry requirements and travel regulations. The free visa applies only to fees and does not replace immigration procedures.
A Strategic Step Toward Tourism Growth
Sri Lankaโs planned visa initiative reflects a wider global trend toward easing travel restrictions to revive tourism. By removing visa fees temporarily, the country hopes to rebuild visitor confidence and stimulate international travel demand.
If implemented successfully, the initiative could strengthen tourism ties with participating countries while supporting economic recovery through increased visitor activity.
