Karachi Biennale 2024 to Launch on October 27 with First Woman Curator at the Helm

Karachi Biennale

The highly anticipated fourth edition of the Karachi Biennale (KB24), Pakistan’s largest contemporary art exhibition, will commence on October 27 and run until November 10. This year, for the first time, the event will be curated by a woman, Waheeda Baloch, a professor at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro.

Taking place across five major public venues – Sambara Art Gallery, NED University (City Campus), Frere Hall, Bagh Ibne Qasim, and Alliance Française – the Biennale will offer an engaging array of art installations, performances, pop-up exhibitions, and interactive sessions. Visitors can experience the event from Monday to Thursday between 10am to 6pm, and Friday to Sunday from 10am to 7pm.

The theme for KB24, “Rizq | Risk,” will explore the delicate balance between sustenance and threat, highlighting issues like food security and the ecological challenges facing Pakistan. Over 40 artists from 11 countries will participate in 18 projects, delving into topics such as environmental degradation, climate change, and social justice.

Drawing inspiration from her work with communities affected by recent floods, Waheeda Baloch aims to provoke meaningful discussions about food systems, sustainability, and cultural heritage. The exhibition will also address global issues like colonial legacies, globalization, and the impact of carbon emissions, while exploring the loss of culinary traditions and the effects of natural disasters on food production.

The Karachi Biennale 2024 hopes to inspire critical reflection on the themes of climate resilience and social justice, with art serving as both a platform for dialogue and a call to action. Full details of the public programming and participating artists can be found on the event’s official website.
