The vibrant 15-day annual Chaumos festivities of the Kalash community have commenced in Chitral, unfolding with traditional customs and colors.
This celebration, held every December, marks the onset of the new year for the community, symbolizing aspirations for a brighter future. Notably, the festival aligns with the winter solstice.
During the festivities, men and women adorn themselves in traditional Kalash attire, engaging in lively dances while partaking in the preparation of customary foods. Prior to joining the celebration, participants undergo a purification ritual by fire, distinguished for women and children as well as for men.
The festival extends across all three valleys of the Kalash – Bumburet, Rumbur, and Birir – creating a unified and festive atmosphere. The district administration in Chitral has meticulously organized all arrangements for the smooth conduct of the event.
In a recent development, there are new restrictions in place, with vloggers and YouTubers now required to obtain permission from authorities before recording any videos of the festival.
