Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem failed to retain his Commonwealth Games men’s javelin title on Friday. The defending champion finished ninth in the final at Scotstoun Stadium.
Nadeem opened the competition with a foul on his first attempt. He then recorded his best throw of 77.41 metres in the second round.
However, the effort left him ninth after two rounds. He needed a stronger final throw to remain in medal contention.
Nadeem Exits Medal Race After Third Attempt
The 29-year-old managed 75.39 metres on his third and final attempt. Consequently, he remained ninth and exited the competition before the later rounds.
Nadeem won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with a remarkable 90.18-metre throw. However, he could not match that performance during this year’s final.
Sri Lanka’s Tharanga Tops Final Standings
Sri Lanka’s Ramesh Tharanga led the event with a best throw of 89.75 metres. Meanwhile, India’s Neeraj Chopra secured second place after reaching 85.83 metres.
Earlier, Nadeem qualified for the final after finishing seventh with a throw of 78.63 metres. No athlete achieved the automatic qualifying mark of 84 metres.
Instead, the top 12 performers advanced to the final. Pakistan’s Yasir Sultan missed qualification after finishing 14th with a best throw of 74.36 metres.
