The federal cabinet on Sunday approved the deployment of security forces in three districts of Gilgit-Baltistan, citing the prevailing law and order situation. Officials said the decision aims to ensure peace and stability in sensitive areas of the northern region.
Emergency approval granted for security deployment
According to government sources, the federal cabinet authorized the immediate deployment of the Pakistan Army and civil armed forces in the districts of Gilgit, Skardu, and Shigar. Authorities stated that the government approved the required strength of personnel to maintain public order and prevent any deterioration in the security environment.
Moreover, officials confirmed that the deployment will take effect immediately. The move reflects the governmentโs effort to proactively manage the situation and reassure residents in the affected districts.
Forces to remain for initial 14-day period
Sources further revealed that the initial deployment will remain in place for 14 days. However, authorities may review the duration depending on ground realities and the evolving security landscape.
Meanwhile, the government invoked Article 245 of the Constitution to deploy the Pakistan Army. In addition, officials authorized the deployment of civil armed forces under the provisions of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.
Officials emphasized that the step aims to strengthen law enforcement capacity and support local administration. Residents in the region continue to monitor developments closely as authorities move to stabilize the situation.
