TEHRAN: The United States has reportedly offered to lift its blockade and sanctions against Iran in exchange for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and halting attacks by Iran-linked regional groups, according to a senior source cited by Al Arabiya English. Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir reportedly conveyed the American proposal during his visit to Tehran, where he held discussions with senior Iranian officials as part of Pakistan’s continuing mediation efforts between Washington and Tehran.
According to the report, Munir met Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and a representative of the supreme leader. The source described their discussions as “clear and decisive.”
Washington Links Relief to Hormuz Reopening
Under the reported proposal, Washington would ease sanctions and lift its blockade if Tehran reopened the strategically important Strait of Hormuz and helped stop attacks carried out by Iran-linked groups across the region.
Meanwhile, Munir reportedly urged Iranian officials to end such attacks, which have contributed to escalating regional tensions.
The proposal could provide a framework for renewed negotiations after months of military confrontation and economic pressure. However, neither Washington nor Tehran immediately announced an agreement based on the reported terms.
Munir Urges Revival of June Understanding
Furthermore, Munir reportedly called on Iran to resume implementing the Memorandum of Understanding reached with the United States in June.
According to the source, the Pakistani army chief told Rezaei that both Washington and Tehran bore responsibility for disrupting implementation of earlier understandings.
Pakistan has sought to maintain communication between the two governments as mistrust continues to obstruct direct negotiations.
Consequently, Munir’s Tehran meetings could become an important test of whether the two sides can revive the June framework.
Attention will now turn to Iran’s response and whether Washington and Tehran can translate Pakistan’s mediation into concrete steps toward reopening Hormuz and reducing regional hostilities.
