Pakistani mountaineer and trail runner Anum Uzair has won Pakistan’s first-ever 100-kilometre Galiyat Mountain Trail Ultra Marathon. Moreover, her victory highlights remarkable endurance across one of the country’s toughest trail running competitions.
Anum Overcomes Gruelling Mountain Challenges
The ultra marathon tested participants across rugged mountains and dense forests throughout the Galiyat region. Furthermore, competitors faced unpredictable weather and concerns about encountering dangerous wildlife.
Despite these challenges, Anum completed the demanding race with determination and resilience. She later dedicated her achievement to the women of Pakistan, especially aspiring female runners.
Anum also pledged to continue representing Pakistan by embracing more unique international challenges. She described the ultra marathon as a dangerous but rewarding experience.
“I knew this wouldn’t be an easy challenge,” Anum said. She explained that lightning posed risks similar to snowstorms during mountaineering expeditions. Additionally, she considered wildlife an even greater concern throughout the demanding race.
Runner Shares Lessons From Her Journey
Recalling a training session, Anum revealed she once encountered a leopard during practice. She said the animal was sitting nearly 200 feet ahead on the trail.
However, the frightening experience gradually strengthened her confidence and determination. “Once the fear was gone from my mind, I focused only on my goal,” she said.
Anum also explained that mountaineering and trail running present completely different challenges. Nevertheless, she believes shorter trail events help her balance sports with motherhood and family responsibilities.
She added that maintaining fitness throughout the year remains essential for every athlete. As part of her routine, Anum regularly climbs the equivalent of 100 floors using stairs. Consequently, she keeps herself physically prepared before accepting every new challenge.
