Commentary suggests operations may reflect a broader campaign targeting key strategic locations
LONDON: Political analyst Arash Reisinezhad has argued that the recent pattern of reported US military strikes in southern Iran closely aligns with an assessment he published four months ago, in which he identified five strategic locations that he believed could become primary targets in a sustained military campaign.
In a post on X, Reisinezhad said the sequence of reported operations appears increasingly consistent with his earlier analysis. According to him, the reported strikes initially focused on Iranian islands before expanding to coastal areas and, more recently, to locations deeper inside southern Iran.
He suggested that the reported progression indicates more than a series of isolated tactical operations and could represent a broader military approach. However, these observations are his interpretation and have not been independently verified.
Focus on strategic infrastructure
Reisinezhad argued that the reported pattern may be intended to gradually weaken Iran’s defensive network responsible for securing the Strait of Hormuz and other strategically important sites, including Kharg Island.
According to his analysis, increasing pressure on these locations could affect Iran’s ability to project military power and protect critical energy and maritime infrastructure in the region.
Future trajectory remains uncertain
Meanwhile, Reisinezhad said it remains unclear whether the reported campaign will remain limited to southern Iran or expand further. He noted that the evolving sequence of reported strikes raises the possibility that current operations could form part of a wider operational strategy rather than a short-term military effort.
He added that the five locations identified in his earlier analysis now appear to be facing increasing pressure, although he stressed that the long-term objectives of the reported operations remain uncertain.
Neither US nor Iranian authorities have publicly confirmed the analyst’s assessment, and independent verification of the broader strategic interpretation remains unavailable. The observations reflect Reisinezhad’s analysis and not official statements from governments or military agencies.
Four months ago, in my @ForeignPolicy piece, I argued that five strategic locations in southern Iran would constitute the primary targets in any sustained U.S. military campaign. Today, the emerging pattern of strikes appears increasingly consistent with that assessment.
