Eighteen years after her wrongful arrest and prosecution for the murder of her roommate in Italy, Amanda Knox returns to confront the man who put her behind bars. The new Hulu documentary, โMouth of the Wolf: Amanda Knox Returns to Italy,โ offers an intimate look at her reckoning, told through her own words and the lens of her husband, Chris Robinson.
Filming began in 2019, capturing both her vulnerable momentsโpanic attacks, tears, and raw emotionโand her triumphs. Robinson said he wanted to show the woman he fell in love with, beyond the public perception shaped by tabloid coverage.
The documentary follows Knoxโs journey to face Italian prosecutor Giuliano Mignini, the man who pursued her conviction. The story also shows Amanda at home on Vashon Island, balancing motherhood with unresolved trauma. She explained that the urgency to confront her past grew stronger when she became pregnant with her daughter, seeking to prevent passing on her grief.
โI set out to understand him. But the funny thing about truly understanding a person is that you come to care about them, warts and all,โ Knox said of Mignini. The two now maintain a quiet, cordial connection, exchanging messages almost daily.
Robinson emphasized that the documentaryโs message extends beyond Knoxโs personal story. Itโs about prosecutorial accountability, wrongful convictions, and confronting trauma with compassion. The film also features interviews with other exonerees and Innocence Project figures, providing context to the broader issue of justice and reconciliation.
Knox and Robinson even got matching tattoos symbolizing their commitment to constructive conversations, finding common ground, and showing compassion in conflict. โWhen youโve been harmed, what do you do about it? Do you wait for the world to do you justice, or do you make justice for yourself?โ Knox asked.
โMouth of the Wolf: Amanda Knox Returns to Italyโ premieres on Hulu on Monday, Jan. 26.
