Albania’s intelligence chief Vlora Hyseni has surrendered to authorities as a corruption investigation widens around the country’s security and government circles.
Hyseni, director of Albania’s State Intelligence Service, turned herself in at the Morina border crossing between Albania and Kosovo. The development followed an arrest warrant issued during an investigation led by the Special Prosecution Office Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK).
A court had earlier ordered Hyseni’s suspension from duty and placed her under house arrest over allegations involving classified information.
Why Is Albania’s Intelligence Chief Under Investigation?
SPAK is investigating allegations that Hyseni disclosed classified information to unauthorized individuals.
The allegations are connected to a wider corruption investigation involving Albania’s National Agency for Information Society. The agency oversees digital public services and information technology infrastructure.
According to prosecutors, the investigation concerns the alleged disclosure of sensitive information linked to that corruption case.
However, the allegations remain under investigation and do not represent a final finding of guilt.
Hyseni Surrenders at Albania-Kosovo Border
Hyseni surrendered at the Morina border crossing after authorities issued an arrest warrant against her.
The border point connects Albania with Kosovo and became the location where she turned herself in to Albanian authorities.
Meanwhile, Albania’s special court had already approved restrictive measures requested by SPAK.
Those measures included house arrest and suspension from exercising her public duties.
Investigation Puts Pressure on Government
The case has also increased scrutiny around Prime Minister Edi Rama’s government.
The broader investigation involves alleged corruption surrounding the government agency responsible for digital public services and information technology.
Several individuals have reportedly come under investigation as authorities examine the allegations. The probe has also involved figures connected to Albania’s security and law-enforcement institutions.
In addition, a senior official from the Scientific Police Institute has been taken into custody as part of the investigation.
President Formally Removes Hyseni
Albanian President Bajram Begaj has formally decreed Hyseni’s dismissal as director of the State Intelligence Service.
The decision followed the court-ordered suspension and house arrest measures against her.
The latest developments leave the investigation continuing as authorities examine the alleged disclosure of classified information and other suspected wrongdoing.
The case has therefore placed Albania’s intelligence leadership under renewed scrutiny while the judicial process moves forward.
