ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK SC) has overturned the two-year disqualification of former Prime Minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas, who was initially disqualified by the AJK High Court in April 2023. Ilyas, a loyalist of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), sought relief through an appeal in the AJK Supreme Court and offered an apology for contempt of court, which led to the reversal of the ruling.
The disqualification was lifted just two months before its term was set to expire in April 2025. Ilyas had previously criticized the judiciary for issuing stay orders on government affairs during a public gathering, which contributed to his initial disqualification.
Following Ilyas’ disqualification, Chaudhry Anwarul Haq was elected as the new Prime Minister of the AJK Legislative Assembly. Ilyas had also been arrested in May of the previous year on charges related to an attack on a company’s office, but he was granted bail shortly after his arrest.
