A flawed intelligence assessment reportedly brought US forces close to intercepting a Chinese vessel in the Middle East.
The incident occurred during the war with Iran, when an intelligence report falsely claimed the ship carried nuclear weapons programme components. The report circulated within the US military and triggered preparations for an operation against the vessel.
Armed personnel were reportedly preparing to board the ship, while military aircraft were already in the air. However, officials discovered a critical error shortly before the planned operation.
AI Chatbot Produced False Intelligence
According to people familiar with the incident, a special operations command analyst used an AI chatbot to assess intelligence from the ship’s manifest.
The system reportedly combined publicly available information with classified signals intelligence. It then incorrectly concluded that the vessel was carrying material linked to a nuclear weapons programme.
The analyst subsequently used the AI system again to convert the findings into a standard intelligence report. The report then circulated through military channels.
Officials later determined that the assessment contained a major error concerning the ship’s cargo. One source described the report as “entirely false”, while another said it “almost started a war”.
The exact cargo carried by the Chinese vessel remains unclear. It is also unclear whether the material posed any actual threat.
US Operation Halted Before Interception
The reported error came to light shortly before US forces were expected to carry out the planned operation.
Two sources said armed US personnel were preparing to board the vessel. Meanwhile, other sources said military aircraft had already taken to the air.
The discovery prevented the operation from moving forward based on the incorrect intelligence. A US operation against a Chinese vessel could have created a serious escalation between Washington and Beijing.
The incident therefore highlights the consequences of inaccurate information reaching military decision-makers during an active conflict.
AI Use Expands Across Military Intelligence
US defence and intelligence agencies are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence to process large volumes of information.
The technology can help analysts examine data and produce intelligence more quickly. However, the Chinese ship incident shows the potential consequences when AI-generated conclusions receive insufficient verification.
US officials have argued that AI can help the military keep pace with potential adversaries, including China. At the same time, concerns remain over the reliability of AI-generated information in sensitive security decisions.
The incident also illustrates how quickly an incorrect AI assessment can move through established intelligence processes.
Questions Remain Over AI System
The identity of the chatbot used by the analyst has not been disclosed. It also remains unclear whether the system was commercially available or developed specifically for the US government.
The Pentagon and US Special Operations Command Pacific did not provide comments on the reported incident.
Sources also said similar AI-related errors have occurred elsewhere within the intelligence community as the technology has become more widely used.
They warned that pressure to produce intelligence more quickly could increase the risk of analysts accepting AI-generated conclusions without adequate verification.
The reported episode has consequently renewed attention on the need to scrutinise AI-assisted intelligence before it informs decisions involving military operations and international tensions.
