Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has invited Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman to undertake an official visit to Pakistan following his party’s decisive electoral victory. The invitation came during a telephone conversation between the two leaders after the general election results were announced.
The BNP secured a two-thirds majority in Bangladesh’s national elections. The outcome is widely viewed as a step toward political stability after months of unrest.
Commitment to Stronger Bilateral Relations
During the conversation, Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed Pakistan’s desire to strengthen its brotherly ties with Bangladesh. He emphasized cooperation based on peace, progress, and shared prosperity.
The premier also highlighted the importance of building on the legacy of Begum Khaleda Zia in fostering closer relations between the two countries. Furthermore, he reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to respecting each nation’s sovereignty while expanding collaboration in mutually beneficial sectors.
Both leaders agreed to maintain close contact in the coming days. They stressed the importance of working together for the welfare of their peoples.
Election Outcome and Political Developments
According to preliminary counts, the BNP and its allies secured at least 212 of the 299 parliamentary seats. Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami and allied parties won 70 seats in the Jatiya Sangsad.
The election has been described as one of the most competitive in recent years. A clear majority result was considered essential for restoring stability in the country of 175 million people.
The BNP returns to power after two decades. However, the party urged supporters to avoid celebratory rallies and instead offer prayers for national unity and stability.
Tarique Rahman, son of former president Ziaur Rahman, is widely expected to assume the office of prime minister. He returned to Dhaka in December after spending 18 years abroad.
Exchange of Invitations
Prime Minister Shehbaz formally invited Rahman to visit Pakistan soon. In response, the BNP leader warmly invited the Pakistani premier to undertake an official visit to Bangladesh.
The exchange of invitations signals a renewed diplomatic engagement between Islamabad and Dhaka. Moreover, it reflects a shared interest in revitalizing bilateral ties after years of limited high-level contact.
Looking Ahead
Both sides acknowledged the historic relationship between Pakistan and Bangladesh. They also recognized the need for constructive dialogue and economic cooperation.
With a stable government now emerging in Dhaka, opportunities for enhanced trade, diplomatic engagement, and regional cooperation may expand. Consequently, observers expect renewed momentum in Pakistan-Bangladesh relations in the coming months.
The recent developments indicate a willingness on both sides to move forward pragmatically. Therefore, diplomatic engagement is likely to intensify as the new leadership assumes office.
