Veteran journalist Christiane Amanpour will leave CNN in June 2027, ending a 43-year career with the international news network.
Amanpour, CNN’s chief international anchor, announced her decision on Monday after months of consideration. She said she looks forward to exploring new projects while continuing to support independent journalism.
Amanpour to Scale Back Her CNN Programme
Amanpour will gradually reduce her television commitments before leaving the network. Her flagship programme, Amanpour, will move to a weekly schedule in January 2027 and end in May.
She will continue reporting for CNN until June 2027. However, her PBS programme, Amanpour & Company, will conclude at the end of 2026.
Meanwhile, Amanpour plans to continue her podcast, The Ex Files, which she co-hosts with her former husband, Jamie Rubin, a former US diplomat.
Four Decades of Reporting From Conflict Zones
Amanpour joined CNN in 1983 as an assistant on the international assignment desk. Over the years, she rose through the ranks to become one of the network’s most recognised journalists.
Her reporting from major conflict zones helped establish her reputation internationally. She covered the Gulf War, Bosnia, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Iraq and Ukraine, bringing stories from conflict areas to audiences worldwide.
Moreover, Amanpour interviewed numerous world leaders and influential public figures throughout her career. Her work often focused on war, human rights and international affairs.
In her departure statement, she stressed the importance of independent reporting. She urged journalists to remain truthful rather than simply neutral.
CNN Leadership Praises Her Contribution
CNN chairman and chief executive Mark Thompson praised Amanpour’s decades of work and dedication to the network. He said he respected her decision, although he regretted her departure.
Her announcement comes as CNN enters a new phase under Skydance ownership following its parent company’s acquisition. However, Amanpour did not directly link her departure to the ownership change.
The veteran journalist has previously spoken about the importance of editorial independence amid political and financial pressures on news organisations.
As she prepares to leave, Amanpour says she intends to pursue new opportunities while continuing to support CNN’s tradition of independent journalism.
