Opposition leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai has claimed that former prime minister Imran Khan is being pressured into an agreement similar to arrangements previously made by former premiers Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto.
Speaking at a news conference in Peshawar on Friday, Achakzai compared the situation to the periods when both former prime ministers went into self-imposed exile after losing power. He criticised the current political environment and questioned whether opposition leaders could exercise their constitutional rights freely.
Achakzai appeared alongside Tehreek-i-Tahafuz-i-Ayin-i-Pakistan leaders Sardar Akhtar Mengal and Allama Raja Nasir Abbas.
Opposition Demands Parliamentary Authority
Achakzai said opposition parties remained in contact and planned to organise a multi-party conference. He added that resigning from assemblies remained an option as the alliance continued considering its response to the political situation.
He also demanded the restoration of parliamentary authority, the withdrawal of what he described as an unjust constitutional amendment, and the formation of an independent commission to ensure transparent elections.
Furthermore, Achakzai expressed concern over the whereabouts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and other lawmakers. He insisted that authorities must disclose their whereabouts and respect the constitutional rights of elected representatives.
Alliance Challenges Emergency Rule In Court
Meanwhile, the opposition alliance challenged the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa before the Peshawar High Court.
The petitioners asked the court to declare the measures unconstitutional and illegal. They also challenged the transfer of provincial legislative powers to parliament and the removal of the elected chief minister and provincial cabinet.
Sardar Akhtar Mengal criticised the government’s actions, arguing that those responsible for protecting the Constitution were undermining its principles. He also questioned whether military operations had improved security conditions in Balochistan.
Allama Raja Nasir Abbas said lawlessness had intensified and questioned the authorities’ handling of the provincial crisis.
The petitioners further requested interim relief to suspend the disputed measures until the court reaches a final decision. The legal challenge seeks to protect elected institutions and prevent actions that allegedly exceed constitutional authority.
