Aamir Tamba, one of the accused in the 2013 fatal attack on Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh in Kot Lakhpat jail, has succumbed to his injuries after unidentified motorcyclists opened fire on him on Sunday morning.
The attack occurred in Lahore’s Islampura area, resulting in Tamba sustaining critical wounds. Sources from his family confirmed his death, attributing it to excessive bleeding caused by the four bullets that struck him.
His family asserted that Tamba had been receiving threats for some time, claiming that two unidentified assailants entered their house and shot him. Police sources revealed that Tamba was shot twice in the chest and twice in the legs.
Law enforcement agencies have taken custody of Tamba’s body and initiated an investigation into the incident. According to police reports, the shooting occurred in the Ganga Street area of Islampura, where two suspects on a motorcycle carried out the attack. Tamba was promptly rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention, while authorities cordoned off the area to search for the assailants.
A case regarding the attack on Tamba has been registered at Islampura police station based on a complaint filed by his brother Junaid Sarfaraz. The case has been registered under murder provisions, with the FIR stating that Tamba was shot thrice while present in the upper storey of their house. The complaint described one attacker wearing a helmet and the other wearing a mask, and detailed Tamba’s subsequent transportation to the hospital via ambulance.
Tamba’s connection to the infamous attack on Sarabjit Singh complicates the narrative surrounding this incident. In December 2018, the Lahore District and Sessions Court acquitted Tamba and co-accused Mudassar, both on death row in Kot Lakhpat Jail, of all charges related to Singh’s killing due to a lack of evidence.
Singh’s death in 2013 resulted from an attack by Tamba and Mudassar using bricks and iron rods. Singh, aged 49, had been convicted for his involvement in several bombings in the Pakistani Punjab in 1990, leading to his death penalty sentence.
