A 32-year-old accused, identified as Usman, died while in police custody in Lahore Cantonment after his health deteriorated during detention on Saturday.
The incident occurred at West Cantonment Police Station, where officers had arrested Usman after finding his behaviour suspicious. Police claimed that he had concealed his identity by posing as a government official.
Police Arrest Suspect Over Suspicious Behaviour
According to police, officers questioned Usman after noticing suspicious activity. However, investigators reportedly found insufficient evidence to establish the allegations, prompting them to register a first information report (FIR) against him.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Amir Hameed registered the case on behalf of the police. Meanwhile, officers kept Usman in the Operations Wing during the initial proceedings.
During his custody, Usman’s health suddenly deteriorated, raising concerns among the personnel present. Consequently, police rushed him to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) for emergency medical treatment.
Hospital Confirms Death After Medical Treatment
Doctors at the hospital attempted to save Usman’s life after his arrival. However, he died at approximately 5:30 pm, with police attributing his death to cardiac arrest.
The incident has raised serious concerns because reports linked the death to alleged police torture, while officials cited a cardiac arrest as the immediate cause. A post-mortem examination is expected to help establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
Furthermore, the findings could clarify whether any physical injuries or other factors contributed to the fatal incident. The case highlights the importance of transparent investigations into deaths occurring in police custody.
Authorities will need to establish the exact sequence of events, assess the available medical evidence and determine whether any misconduct occurred. Meanwhile, the post-mortem findings remain crucial to understanding the circumstances behind Usman’s death.
