The Pakistan Hockey Federation has appointed Abu Bakar as the new national team captain. The decision follows recommendations from the federation’s Professional Development Committee.
According to a PHF statement, committee members Islahuddin Siddiqui and Hassan Sardar proposed the appointment. PHF President Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani later approved the recommendation.
Abu Bakar will now lead Pakistan in upcoming international competitions. The federation announced the change as part of its efforts to strengthen the national side.
Abu Bakar Replaces Amaad Butt as Captain
Abu Bakar succeeds Amaad Butt, who previously captained the national team. However, the PHF confirmed that Butt will remain an important member of the squad.
The federation praised Butt’s dedication and contribution during his tenure. Officials said his experience will continue benefiting the team as a senior player.
Furthermore, the PHF expressed confidence in Abu Bakar’s leadership abilities. It believes the combination of experienced and young players can improve team performance.
Leadership Change Follows Difficult Pro League Campaign
The appointment comes after Pakistan’s disappointing FIH Pro League 2026 campaign. The national team failed to register a single victory during the tournament.
Pakistan lost all 16 matches in the nine-team competition. Consequently, the side finished at the bottom of the standings with a goal difference of minus 57.
Despite recent struggles, Pakistan achieved a significant milestone earlier this year. In March, the team qualified for the 2026 FIH Hockey Men’s World Cup.
Pakistan secured qualification by defeating Japan 4-3 in the semi-finals of the qualifiers. The match took place in Ismailia, Egypt, on March 6, 2026.
The upcoming World Cup will run from August 14 to August 30. Co-hosts FIH will stage the tournament in the Netherlands and Belgium.
