ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi emphasized that he has maintained a 35-year relationship with Nawaz Sharif, and these ties go beyond political considerations. This statement comes amid speculations that his association with PML-N has, for the most part, reached its conclusion, and official announcement of this is just a matter of time.
Speaking to the media after a two-hour meeting with PML-N supremo Nawaz, Abbasi discussed in detail the issues facing Pakistan. He suggested to Nawaz that uniting the nation and demonstrating statesmanship is crucial, given the numerous crises the country is currently grappling with.

A few days after announcing the need for a new political party in Pakistan and asserting that existing parties like PMLN, PTI, and PPP had failed, Abbasi met with Nawaz. He clarified that he had discussed the idea of forming a new party but had not actually formed one. He emphasized the necessity to address the injustices faced by Nawaz Sharif, with whom he has had a 35-year association.
Abbasi highlighted Nawaz Sharif’s seniority in Pakistani politics and his deep understanding of the political landscape. He expressed the belief that Nawaz should lead the entire nation forward, putting aside past grievances.
“We discussed various issues, finding both common ground and areas of disagreement,” Abbasi stated.
The former prime minister maintained that the courts should have resolved Nawaz’s legal matters, including his disqualification, before his return to Pakistan. He argued that the courts unfairly treated Nawaz and that he deserves justice.
New party
When asked if he discussed “Re-Imagining Pakistan” or the new party matter with Nawaz, Abbasi stated that he discussed every matter with Nawaz Sharif and “shared my opinion.”
Abbasi clarified that he maintains good relations with everyone in PML-N and has no reservations or issues with any party member. He also pointed out that he had not participated in the consultations regarding Nawaz’s return to Pakistan or in any decision-making process.
A senior PML-N source observed that Abbasi has been deviating from party discipline for several months now, indicating his clear departure from the party. The source noted that Abbasi has expressed his intention to launch a new party or be part of one after its establishment.
“It’s only a matter of time before Shahid Khaqan, Miftah Ismail, and Mustafa Khokhar launch this new party as a new political force. The fate it will meet is another matter.”
May 9
He emphasized that what transpired on May 9, when PTI ransacked state installations, is unprecedented and unheard of in Pakistan’s history.
He believes that authorities must punish those involved and must handle the situation in accordance with the law.
“I am opposed to the persecution of anyone. Prosecution is necessary for those who break the law, but actions beyond the boundaries of the law should not be tolerated.”
Regarding the position of prime minister, Abbasi stated, “If the PML-N comes to power, the party will determine the choice for the premiership.”
As Abbasi left, a small group of PTI supporters staged a protest outside. When asked for his comments on the protesters, Abbasi mentioned that he “prayed for their guidance from Allah.”
