KYIV: According to a senior official in Kyiv, Saudi Arabia is making preparations to host a summit to discuss Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s peace plan in light of the ongoing Russian invasion. Andriy Yermak, Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, stated that officials from several countries will participate in the summit. However, the organizers have not disclosed specific details regarding the date and location of the meeting yet.

The Wall Street Journal reported that about 30 countries will attend the summit scheduled to take place on August 5 and 6 in Jeddah. The goal is to discuss Zelenskyy’s peace plan, with hopes that it could lead to a later peace summit. At this summit, global leaders would agree on shared principles to resolve the conflict.
The 10 points include the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, the withdrawal of Russian troops, and the release of all prisoners. Additionally, they propose the establishment of a tribunal to hold those responsible for the aggression accountable and provide security guarantees for Ukraine.
Yermak emphasized that the Ukrainian peace plan should serve as the foundation for future talks. He also highlighted that these 10 points have been under discussion with representatives from over 50 countries.
The upcoming summit in Saudi Arabia follows a previous meeting of senior officials in Copenhagen in late June. It included countries like Brazil, India, Turkey, and South Africa.
The Jeddah summit is expected to have about 30 invitees, including countries like Chile, Egypt, the European Union, Indonesia, Mexico, Poland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Zambia, among others. Notably, Russia has not been invited to the summit. A high-level official from US President Joe Biden’s administration may also attend the meeting.
Hosting the talks in Saudi Arabia helps raise the profile of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He has been seeking a detente with Iran and pushing for peace in Yemen.
The US and Ukraine will soon begin discussing a bilateral security agreement. These agreements aim to assist Ukraine in enhancing its military capabilities.
Amid the ongoing war, various peace plans emerged, including one by Russian President Vladimir Putin in meetings with African leaders. Additionally, China and Pope Francis have been working on their own respective plans. However, they have not disclosed the details yet.
