Pakistan has formally invited Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for an official visit. The invitation marks the first high-level engagement between the two governments after recent elections.
Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal conveyed the invitation. He met Rahman in Dhaka following his oath-taking ceremony.
Iqbal represented Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during the meeting. Moreover, he extended warm congratulations on Rahman’s election victory.
Focus on Strengthening Bilateral Relations
During discussions, both leaders explored ways to deepen bilateral cooperation. They emphasized the importance of rebuilding trust and expanding collaboration.
Iqbal highlighted the need to revive the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation. He noted that regional connectivity remains limited due to historical tensions.
Therefore, he stressed that renewed engagement could unlock economic potential across South Asia. Both sides agreed that stronger regional integration would benefit their economies.
Proposal for Pakistan–Bangladesh Knowledge Corridor
Iqbal proposed the creation of a Pakistan–Bangladesh Knowledge Corridor. The initiative aims to enhance academic and research collaboration.
He informed Rahman that Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission would explore twin-university agreements. In addition, authorities plan to promote student and faculty exchange programs.
Furthermore, Pakistan has allocated 500 scholarships for Bangladeshi students. Currently, 75 students are already enrolled in Pakistani institutions.
This educational partnership seeks to strengthen intellectual ties. At the same time, it encourages innovation and technological cooperation.
Institutional and Economic Collaboration
Both leaders discussed cooperation between national institutions. These include the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics and NADRA, along with Bangladeshi counterparts.
They explored sharing expertise in data systems and digital governance. Capacity building and technical collaboration also formed part of the dialogue.
Moreover, both sides reviewed opportunities in small and medium enterprises. Cottage industries and trade expansion were also discussed.
Direct flight operations were considered to improve connectivity. Enhanced travel links could support trade and people-to-people exchanges.
Cultural and Historical Engagement
Iqbal proposed reviving the Iqbal Academy to promote shared intellectual heritage. He also suggested joint celebrations for the 150th birth anniversary of Allama Muhammad Iqbal next year.
Such initiatives aim to strengthen cultural bonds. Therefore, both countries may highlight common historical and literary connections.
Commitment to Regional Peace and Stability
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to stronger bilateral ties. Both leaders expressed their intent to work together for regional peace and prosperity.
