Lahore becomes first city to offer free WiFi at 50 locations

LAHORE: In a move aimed at fostering connectivity and expanding internet accessibility for the populace, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz officially launched a pilot initiative and provided free WiFi services at 50 prominent locations throughout Lahore.

Endorsed personally by the CM, the project strives to offer uninterrupted internet connectivity to the public, marking a notable stride towards digital empowerment.

Expressing her dedication to fulfilling commitments, CM Maryam Nawaz expressed contentment with the commencement of free WiFi services at the specified areas in Lahore, affirming, “Free WiFi has been initiated at the following (50 spots) in Lahore. The remainder of Lahore is also in progress. Alhamdo-Lillah! We promise, we deliver.”

Under the directive of CM Maryam Nawaz, the PITB has been mandated to prioritize the deployment of complimentary WiFi services in educational institutions, airports, railway stations, and bus terminals.

It is projected that a total of 516 locations across Lahore will benefit from this endeavor, substantially enhancing internet accessibility for residents.

This venture symbolizes a notable revival of the complimentary WiFi services initially introduced by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government in 2013. However, these services were discontinued by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government due to unpaid bills to internet providers.

Previously overseen by the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), the management of WiFi services has now been transitioned to the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB), ensuring effective administration and operation.
