Ali Nasir Rizvi Assumes Charge as New Inspector General of Islamabad Police Amidst Controversy

Ali Nasir Rizvi, a seasoned officer of the Police Service of Pakistan, officially assumed the position of Inspector General of Police in Islamabad on Monday, as confirmed by the Islamabad Police. Before assuming his duties, Rizvi paid homage at the Martyrs Memorial, adhering to the tradition observed before assuming such a significant role.

Rizvi’s appointment comes after a delay of 22 days since the issuance of his appointment notification, owing to a dispute between the Interior Ministry and Punjab regarding his selection. This delay had stirred some controversy, prompting the Islamabad High Court to intervene, seeking a report from the government on the matter within two weeks.

Former IG Police, Akbar Nasir Khan, vacated his position on March 30, paving the way for Rizvi’s appointment. Prior to this role, Rizvi served as the Deputy Inspector General Operations in Lahore, bringing with him extensive experience from various capacities within the Punjab Police.

However, Rizvi’s appointment was met with resignations from three senior Deputy Inspector Generals in Islamabad, including DIG Headquarters Hassan Raza, DIG Security Muhammad Awais, and DIG Safe City and Traffic Shoaib Shoaib Janbaz. Rizvi’s junior status reportedly triggered their resignation.

Initially, the Punjab government resisted Rizvi’s transfer, citing a shortage of officers in the province and urging the federal government to utilize its officers instead. However, after negotiations, an understanding was reached between the federal government and Punjab, clearing the way for Rizvi to assume his post.

Despite some uncertainties, including the absence of a temporary DIG appointment for the capital, Rizvi’s arrival marks a significant development in Islamabad’s law enforcement leadership. His tenure is anticipated to bring fresh perspectives and strategies to address the security challenges facing the capital city, underscoring the importance of effective collaboration between federal and provincial authorities in ensuring public safety and security.
