In anticipation of this year’s total solar eclipse, space professionals and researchers provide insights into the celestial phenomenon and remind the public about the potential risks associated with it.
On this occasion, a retired NASA scientist and seasoned astronaut, who has had the privilege of observing a total solar eclipse from space, has recently recounted his “one-of-a-kind” experience to the public.
In 2015, Virts, a former NASA employee who retired in 2016, shared with USA Today that he experienced an eclipse while in space, specifically over the North Atlantic region.
He commented on the rare eclipse, which only a few people had the opportunity to witness. It was a remarkable experience, as he described gazing upon the Earth and observing a large, dark circle seemingly gliding across the planet’s surface.
The expert expressed their awe at the view, mentioning it was “unlike anything I’ve ever seen.” Virts humorously shared how he was grateful for NASA’s alert to his team about the eclipse, as witnessing the dark spot moving across Earth would have been disconcerting. However, he found the experience incredibly fascinating.
Virts, an individual who has experienced one solar eclipse from space and numerous ones from Earth, is also part of the group eagerly anticipating the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8th.
Virts comments, “On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate the upcoming eclipse as a seven, finding it quite intriguing. The event causes a slight dimming of light, and with the right eclipse-viewing glasses, one can observe the moon seemingly taking a bite out of the sun.”
Furthermore, Virts emphasized the importance of caution when observing the eclipse, warning against looking directly at the sun without proper eye protection or even regular sunglasses, as the sun’s intense brightness can be damaging.
Virts, having spent approximately 231 days in space, enthusiastically recommended that people attempt to witness the solar eclipse from its path of totality. He emphasized the extraordinary nature of this event, stating, “It’s an awe-inspiring experience and it won’t occur again in America for another 40 years.”
