In a distressing incident in Karachi, an armed couple on a motorcycle reportedly perpetrated a robbery against a fruit seller, making off with cash and mobile phones on Saturday.
The account provided by the fruit seller to Gulberg police station outlined how a man and a woman approached him in Karachiโs North Nazimabad area, initially appearing to be interested in purchasing watermelons.
After buying watermelons valued at Rs 680, the couple handed over a Rs 5,000 bill and requested change. However, upon receiving the change, they abruptly declined to purchase the fruit, citing dissatisfaction with the perceived increase in price, and reclaimed their money.
Later, when the vicinity cleared of other customers, the couple returned, wielding guns, and allegedly proceeded to rob the fruit seller of Rs 60,000 in cash along with two mobile phones.
Reports indicate a distressing trend of citizens losing their lives in resistance to robberies, with February marking the highest tally of 20 killings among at least 45 recorded fatalities in Karachi in 2024.
Responding to the mounting crime wave, the Sindh government appointed Imran Yaqoob Minhas as the new Karachi police chief, relieving Khadim Hussain Rind of his duties. Rind has been instructed to report to the Establishment Division.
To counter the surge in street crimes, Karachi police took the initiative to deploy the Shaheen Force in the city. A 150-member team underwent a refresher course, and multiple Shaheen Force teams were established to tackle the escalating incidents of robbery and violence in the metropolis.
