Senate Election Stalemate Continues as PPP and PML-N Clash Over Women’s Seats

Women’s Seats

Negotiations between the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) regarding women’s seats in the upcoming Senate election have hit a standstill.

Faiza Malik, the PPP candidate for the women’s seat, has refused to withdraw from the election, intensifying the deadlock between the former ruling coalition parties over seat adjustments in the Punjab Senate election.

Malik stated that she filed her nomination papers under the directive of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and affirmed that she hasn’t been asked to step down from the race by the party chief.

It’s noteworthy that two women’s seats in the Senate remain vacant from Punjab. The PML-N has nominated Anusha Rehman and Bushra Anjum Butt, while Malik is contesting from the PPP’s platform.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has put forward Sanam Javed for the Senate seat in Punjab, with Dr. Yasmin Rashid reportedly set to contest on the technocrat seat.

Sanam Javed had appealed to the Appellate Tribunal after her nomination papers were rejected by the Election Commission of Pakistan, and the Lahore High Court’s Appellate Tribunal later accepted her appeal, allowing her to compete in the Senate elections.

The polling for the elections on the 48 vacant seats of the upper house is scheduled for April 2, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the National Assembly and four provincial assemblies.

Earlier today, seven candidates for the Senate’s general seats from Punjab were elected unopposed, including Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

Notable figures among those elected unopposed include PML-N’s Ahad Cheema, Pervaiz Rashid, Nasir Mehmood, and Talal Chaudhry.

Sunni Ittehad Council’s Hamid Khan and Raja Nasir Abbas were also elected on the Senate’s general seats.

Furthermore, several Senate candidates withdrew their nomination papers, including Waleed Iqbal, Shahzad Waseem, Ejaz Hussain Minhas, Musadik Masood Malik, and Omar Sarfraz Cheema.
