During a session in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub, a prominent figure within the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), asserted that the newly-formed government was actively pursuing the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja as the ambassador to Canada.
Ayub accused the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and CEC Sikandar Raja Sultan of orchestrating rigging during the February 8 general elections. He demanded their immediate resignation while addressing the National Assembly, highlighting his party’s dissatisfaction with their conduct.
Expressing concerns over the representation of PTI members in the National Assembly, Ayub questioned whether their voices were being heard or if their presence had become insignificant. He emphasized the legitimacy of their electoral mandates, questioning whether they retained the right to represent their respective constituencies.
Ayub also highlighted an incident where they were barred from entering the House by a police official, further fueling their frustrations regarding their role within the assembly.
The PTI has consistently criticized the ECP and CEC Sikandar Raja Sultan, particularly after the rejection of its intra-party polls, resulting in the loss of the bat symbol. Recently, PTI member Ali Zafar demanded the resignation of the ECP following the rejection of the Sunni Ittehad Council’s (SIC) plea for reserved seats. Zafar also advocated for proceedings against CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja under Article 6 (treason) of the Constitution, indicating that PTI had drafted a resolution for this purpose, which would be presented soon.
