ISLAMABAD: In a recent development, Islamabad police have taken legal action against several Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, including Sher Afzal Marwat, on charges of allegedly obstructing the road during their participation in protests.
The filed FIR also lists other prominent PTI figures, namely Malik Shafqat Awan, Ali Bukhari, Shoaib Ahmed Shaheen, and Shaukat Basra.
Sher Afzal Marwat, one of the accused leaders, vehemently denies the allegations, asserting in a post on X that the FIR contains false claims of a ‘road blockade.’ Marwat contends that at no point during their rally and protest did they engage in any road obstruction.
The situation escalated further as PTI leaders Salman Akram Raja and Sardar Latif Khosa found themselves in police custody amid nationwide protests staged by party members.
The protests, organized in response to alleged rigging in the February 8 general election and the purported theft of mandate, saw PTI leaders and supporters taking to the streets across various cities, including Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Karachi, Kandhkot, Tank, and others.
In a concerning development, Shehbaz Khosa, son of Sardar Latif Khosa, reported that his father was apprehended by the station house officer (SHO) Cantt.
Expressing uncertainty about Latif Khosa’s whereabouts, he raised concerns about the lack of information regarding his father’s detention.
Adding to the list of arrests, the police detained PTI-backed provincial assembly member Hafiz Farhat Abbas, who was actively participating in the protests against alleged ‘election rigging.’
The unfolding events underscore the intensifying tensions and legal repercussions surrounding the political landscape, prompting concerns about the rule of law and the protection of democratic processes in the country.
