Gwadar
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister-elect Shehbaz Sharif is set to prioritize the calamity-stricken Gwadar district as his first official engagement after taking the oath as the country’s chief executive.
Securing 201 votes, Shehbaz was elected as the Prime Minister on Sunday, defeating Sunni Ittehad Council’s (SIC) candidate Omar Ayub Khan, who managed to secure only 92 votes.
Supported by seven other parties, including Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), Pakistan Muslim League-Zia (PML-Z), Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP), and National Party (NP), Shehbaz Sharif’s diverse coalition emphasizes a broad base of political backing.
Taking the oath of office from President Dr. Arif Alvi and receiving a guard of honor, the PM-elect will later embark on his visit to Gwadar, where heavy rainfall caused significant flooding in the coastal city last week.
In his maiden speech as premier, Shehbaz expressed a commitment to addressing the deprivation of the people of Balochistan province.
During the visit, Shehbaz is expected to announce a relief package for Gwadar and make additional announcements for the province. Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti and senior officials will accompany the Prime Minister during this crucial visit.
Shehbaz Sharif’s return to the prime ministership marks his second consecutive term, previously holding the position from April 11, 2022, to August 2023.
His commitment to addressing the challenges faced by Balochistan, coupled with immediate action in Gwadar, sets the tone for the initial days of his renewed leadership.
With a hectic schedule planned for the first 45 days, Shehbaz aims to streamline governance and deliver on his promises.
