Leopard
In a tragic incident in Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s Haryala area, a leopard accidentally hanged itself and succumbed to hypovolemic shock, as reported by the Wildlife Department on Monday.
The unfortunate incident unfolded when the leopard became ensnared in a wild boar trap on Saturday night in the village of Haryala, situated on the outskirts of Patikka town. In its attempt to free itself, the big cat got entangled in a tree’s branch, ultimately hanging upside down throughout the night.
The Wildlife Department was alerted to the situation by concerned villagers around 8:15 am on Sunday. In response, five personnel were dispatched to the area with the intention of rescuing the distressed leopard. Unfortunately, their efforts proved futile, and the animal collapsed around 1:45 pm.
Jazba Shafi, a wildlife range officer, expressed the challenges faced during the rescue attempt, noting that despite their prompt response, the villagers did not cooperate with the wildlife officials. The lack of cooperation may have hindered the rescue operation and contributed to the unfortunate outcome.
A postmortem report revealed that the leopard’s cause of death was hypovolemic shock. The incident highlights the delicate balance between wildlife conservation and human-wildlife interactions, emphasizing the need for community awareness and collaboration in addressing such situations.
Efforts to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts and enhance cooperation between local communities and wildlife authorities are crucial for the well-being of both humans and animals.
This unfortunate event serves as a reminder of the importance of proactive measures to protect wildlife and foster understanding between humans and the natural world.
