Election Rigging
A substantial gathering convened in Jamshoro, Sindh, on Friday to stage a sit-in protest against alleged election rigging in the recent general elections. The Grand Democratic Alliance, along with the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional and other political parties, spearheaded the demonstration, resulting in the blockage of the Karachi-Hyderabad motorway.
The local administration redirected travelers to the national highway route via Thatta. The sit-in took place at the M-9 motorway in Jamshoro, affecting traffic flow on the critical route connecting the Indus Highway and Super Highway.
The protest’s repercussions extended to educational institutions, with the suspension of academic sessions at the University of Sindh, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, and Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences. Additionally, exams in colleges affiliated with the University of Sindh were postponed due to the roadblock.
Fehmida Mirza, a leader of the Grand Democratic Alliance, emphasized the unique nature of this sit-in and expressed concerns about the alleged rigging in various regions, including Larkana, Khairpur, Sanghar, Nawabshah, Dadu, Hyderabad, and Tando Muhammad Khan.
Mirza criticized the general elections as a farce, declaring that Sindh has been treated as a colony and calling for accountability under Article 6 for those involved in vote tampering.
Mirza advocated for the formation of a political alliance among parties with concerns over the election process. She rejected the election results and the election commission, citing issues with the 18th Amendment and demanding a provincial finance commission for Sindh.
The protest leaders, including Saira Bano and Ayaz Latif Palejo, pledged to persist with the sit-in, expressing dissatisfaction with the state of Sindh and vowing to continue their efforts until the province receives what they deem as its rightful share and representation.
