KARACHI: Aijaz Khan Swati, a candidate supported by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) who secured victory in PS-88 Malir during the 2024 General Elections, has declared his decision to join the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
In a video statement, Aijaz Khan Swati announced his unconditional decision to join the PPP, expressing hope that the party, led by Bilawal Bhutto, will earnestly work for the well-being and progress of his constituents. He emphasized his move as being in the best interest of the people he represents.
Aijaz Khan Swati won PS-88 with 17,580 votes, surpassing PPP’s Muzammil Shah who secured 12,762 votes. Notably, Aijaz Khan Swati becomes the second elected member backed by PTI to officially part ways with the party, following Wasim Qadir from NA-121 Lahore, who joined the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N).
With this addition, PPP’s general seats in the Sindh Assembly will increase to 86. In the recent General Elections on February 8th, PPP secured 84 general seats, and another independent candidate from PS-3 Jacobabad, Mumtaz Hussain Jakhrani, had already announced joining the party.
This development comes in the wake of a trend where PTI-backed candidates are aligning with other political entities. On February 11, another PTI-backed independent candidate, Waseem Qadir from NA-121 Lahore-V, expressed confidence and declared joining PML-N.
During his meeting with PML-N’s senior vice president Maryam Nawaz in Lahore, Qadir discussed his decision and shared his vision for the constituency with the party leadership.
