Sherry Rehman, a prominent leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), has called upon the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to address what she alleges are ‘attacks and threats’ by Atta Tarar, a member of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, Rehman claimed that Tarar and his associates are assaulting PPP offices in Lahore and issuing threats of severe consequences. She accused Punjab police of colluding with PML-N’s supporters in these attacks.
Rehman urged the ECP to intervene promptly, urging them to prevent further ‘attacks’ on PPP election offices and to ensure the safety of PPP workers. Emphasizing the need for impartiality, she called on the ECP to demonstrate that it serves all political parties, not favoring any single entity.
The PPP leader highlighted the desire of the youth to vote for her party and stressed the importance of allowing them to exercise their constitutional right. Rehman expressed concern that the electoral process should not be tainted, urging that political rivalries should not escalate into a physical battleground.
Asserting that Lahore should not be affiliated with any particular political party, Sherry Rehman conveyed her appeal for a fair and peaceful electoral environment.
In a related development on February 4, the ECP had summoned both Atta Tarar of PML-N and PPP’s Mian Misbahur Rehman over alleged violations of the Code of Conduct (CoC) in NA-127. The notices were issued on the directives of the Provincial Election Commissioner of Punjab, requiring both candidates to appear in person.
