ISLAMABAD: Bushra Bibi, the wife of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, was apprehended by the women police at Adiala Jail, where she had arrived for the Toshakhana reference case.
Judge Muhammad Bashir awarded 14 years sentence to Imran Khan and his wife Bushra and disqualified them for 10 years in the Toshakhana case.
In December 2023, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) issued a final call-up notice to Bushra Bibi, summoning her to appear at the Rawalpindi office in Islamabad on December 11 concerning the Toshakhana case.
The notice alleges that during Imran Khan’s prime ministership, Bushra Bibi received and retained gifts from foreign dignitaries worth millions of rupees, contravening established procedures for handling such gifts.
According to NAB, in 2019, she possessed a locket with a chain, a pair of earrings, two rings, and a pair of bracelets. In 2020, she retained a necklace, a bracelet, a ring, and a pair of earrings.
In 2021, she received a necklace with a chain, a pair of earrings, a ring, and a wristwatch, which she purportedly failed to deposit in the Toshakhana, as mandated by law.
The anti-graft body has summoned Bushra Bibi to present herself along with the mentioned items to answer questions and provide clarifications.
Who is Bushra Bibi? Bibi is known as the first niqab-wearing spouse of a Pakistani Prime Minister.
Shortly after Khan assumed office, she was quoted by the media expressing her apprehension and stating, “I am sure Imran Khan will fulfill his promises to Pakistan. Allah has given us a great responsibility. Power comes and goes. Imran Khan aims to eliminate poverty from the country. He wants to improve the health and education system in Pakistan.”
Bibi has described Imran as an ‘extremely simple man.’ Discussing the PTI’s slogan and promise of “change,” she asserted that only Imran can bring about the promised change in the country, albeit acknowledging that it would take time.
