Exports
Pakistan’s mobile phone industry is experiencing a notable upswing, and the country is setting ambitious targets for smartphone exports. Federal Minister of IT & Telecom, Dr. Umar Saif, recently emphasized the goal of exporting smartphones worth $500 million in the next two years and an even more staggering target of $5 billion in the subsequent five years.
Dr. Saif shared these aspirations during the Pakistan Mobile Summit 2024, a significant event organized under the Ministry of IT & Telecom and in collaboration with Techno Mobile.
In his remarks, Dr. Umar Saif drew a comparison with India, which annually exports mobile phones worth $10 billion. Expressing confidence in Pakistan’s potential to make a significant impact in the global mobile phone market, the minister highlighted the steps being taken to boost the country’s presence and competitiveness in this industry.
One notable aspect of this growth strategy is the focus on increasing the export of smartphones manufactured in Pakistan. Currently, 35 companies have obtained licenses to assemble smartphones of various brands.
Furthermore, a comprehensive policy is being developed to encourage the local production of complete phones and certain components, which would contribute to the overall expansion of the mobile phone ecosystem in the country. Providing insight into the industry’s recent achievements, Dr. Saif shared that approximately 90 million mobile phones have been assembled in the country within the past two years.
Furthermore, there have been significant strides in exports, with nearly 0.25 million mobile phones, valued at $15 million, already shipped to international markets. These statistics underscore the industry’s positive trajectory, indicating both domestic growth and an increasing footprint in the global market.
The concerted efforts to boost the mobile phone industry in Pakistan are not only aimed at economic growth but also at positioning the country as a competitive player in the international tech market. With an emphasis on local manufacturing and export, Pakistan seeks to capitalize on the rising demand for smartphones worldwide.
